The Berry Crumble Recipe: A “pie” for non-bakers

What’s a berry crumble recipe? A pie for non-bakers? Read on, friends, read on.
This recipe’s a shout-out to you wonderful friends who love pie, but don’t love to bake. No rolling out a homemade pie crust! No lattice-top weaving! No fussing over how to get the first piece out of the pan! Our Berry Crumble recipe is the equally impressive – but less intimidating – sister to a great berry pie.
You’ll be amazed how easy this berry crumble recipe is to make. Even better, the recipe uses a few simple ingredients you probably have on hand. The berries (fresh, or frozen) burst with brightness and flavor, and are topped with a layer of warm, crunchy walnut and cinnamon-laced crumble. This dessert is totally worth the 20 minutes prep time.
And it’s good. Hug-your-momma good.

What’s a crumble?

Never made a berry crumble? Think apple crisp or a crumble-topped pie. Our berry crumble is packed with fruit on the bottom and topped with an oat-laden “dough.”
After it bakes, simply scoop it out of the baking dish and serve warm. It’s casual, homey and tastes like love.

How to make our Berry Crumble recipe even faster

While testing this recipe, we fell in love with the speed and ease. But you say you don’t even have 20 minutes? We hear you, sister.
So….make the recipe even faster by keeping a few bags of frozen berries in the freezer, and prepping the crumble topping ahead of time. This handy hack will make you the hero of any impromptu entertaining, potluck event, or whenever you need to wow with a last-minute dessert.
To make the crumble topping in advance, mix the dry ingredients together, and refrigerate in an airtight container or zip baggie. When you’re ready to make the full recipe, follow these simple steps:
  1. Add fruit of choice to your baking dish (using frozen berries makes the recipe extra fast)
  2. Cut butter into small pieces.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine the pre-made dry crumble topping mixture and butter.
  4. Work the butter into the dry ingredients (with a fork or your hands) until a crumbly dough begins to form.
  5. Spoon the dough crumble on top of the fruit.
  6. Bake according to recipe directions (below)!

You can’t even drive to the bakery that fast.

Simple, delicious, border-line-breakfast food? Seriously. What’s not to love?

Berry Berry Crumble

Author Mary

Ingredients

  • 12 oz Fresh raspberries
  • 12 oz Fresh blueberries
  • 1 Tbs Cornstarch
  • 1/2 c White whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 c Brown sugar
  • 2/3 c Old fashioned oats
  • 2/3 c Walnuts or Pecans chopped
  • 2 tsp Cinnamon or to taste
  • 6 Tbs Butter
  • 2-3 Tbs Water or 100% fruit juice

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

  2. Wash berries. Add clean berries to a quiche pan or 9x9 baking dish. Sprinkle berries with cornstarch. Set aside.

  3. In a large bowl, add remaining dry ingredients and mix to combine. Slice butter into small chunks and add to the dry ingredients. Using a pastry cutter, fork, or your fingers, work the butter into the dry ingredients until it resembles a coarse dough.

  4. Layer the "dough" on top of the berries. Carefully pour the water (or juice) on top so it sinks to the bottom of the pan.

  5. Bake Berry Crumble at 375 degrees F for 45-50 minutes until the dough has turned into a golden crust on top and the berries are hot and bubbly. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream. Yum.

Recipe Notes

Frozen berries can be substituted for fresh. If using frozen berries, use 2 Tbs cornstarch instead of 1 Tbs, and omit the water/fruit juice from the recipe.
